Hmm... Not the
greatest picture I know... but there is a story to tell here. This waterfall is
at the bottom of a ravine and the trail was steep and a long ways down. It was
raining this morning, but I wanted to see this one. With no one in sight I
decided to head down. It was very slick going down and the rain never let up. I
saw several bear tracks and almost turned around several times. No other idiot
would be out in this, but I was persistant and wanted to see this waterfall. I
got to the bottom of a 2 mile down, only to find this... A view to far way, a
waterfall I couldn't get under and a slippery 90 plunge if I got to close to
the edge. I snapped the picture just to say "I went there", and circled back up
to catch a fire road to complete the loop trail. The rain started coming down
harder at this point, but I was already drenched so it made no difference to
me. As I was on my way up, about 1/2 a mile from the bottom, I came to an
opening in the trees and the rain was pouring throught the canopy like a ripped
seam. I stopped cold. I thought for a second... Took off my pack... opened my
arms... put my face to the sky and danced in slow circles, letting the rain hit
me on the face. It was wonderful! I had forgotten that I came here to enjoy
whatever the forest would yield. I had forgotten that every moment is precious
and this is just another part of life that is always changing. I had forgotten
that about the little boy in me that use to play in the rain for hours and LOVE
IT! I had forgotten that I was not calling the shots here, and that God was in
total control. But... the lesson learned here is that I took the
time to remember all that I had tucked away, all that was forgotten, and just
enjoy the day for whatever is presents. The rain didn't matter. My clothes
being drenched to the bone didn't matter. And stomping in the mud didn't
matter. As I stood there having been enlightened by the rain, circling, I
laughed and yelled loud enough as to tell the whole world "THIS IS
BEAUTIFUL"!!!! As I finished my episode of sheer joy, I grabbed my pack, threw
it up over my shoulder, and headed up the trail smiling and stomping in the
puddles like a kid just rying to see how wet he could get. After a short bit,
the rain decided to let up and let me have the rest of the day undaunted. I
made it back to the truck, grabbed a bit to eat, patched up my blistered feet,
and headed back out for another 4 mile hike smiling all the way down the
trail! |
